Charlottesville, VA – The Virginia men’s golf team, off a fourth-place finish to start the season at the Maryland Intercollegiate, debuted in the top-25 of both the Golfweek and Golfstat standings this week. The Cavaliers jumped to No. 19 in the Golfstat rankings and figure No. 25 in Golfweek’s poll.

The Cavaliers participate in the VCU Shootout Monday and Tuesday at the par-72, 6,955-yard Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va. The field for this year’s event includes: Charlotte, East Carolina, Iowa, Maryland, Mercer, Penn State, Richmond UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, VCU, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Wichita State plus 11 individual competitors.

Wake Forest won the 2008 tournament, shooting 825. The Deacons’ Brednan Gielow and Wichita State’s Dustin Garza shared medalist honors at 12-under 201. Virginia placed fourth in the 15-team field last year, led by Amory Davis at 207.

Davis is back in the lineup for this year’s VCU Shootout. He is joined by Ben Kohles, Will Collins, Steven Rojas and Bruce Woodall. Cole Willcox will compete as an individual. Kohles led UVa at the Maryland Intercollegiate by tying for first place with a career-best effort of 7-under 206.

Live scoring of the tournament will be on Golfstat.com. A shotgun start will being play each day at 8:45 a.m.
