BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Virginia women’s team began play at the ITA Atlantic Regional Thursday on the campus of Virginia Tech as qualifying singles and doubles play was held. The Cavaliers had one singles player and one doubles team advance from qualifying to reach the main draw.

Neela Vaez (Perrysburg, Ohio), the top seed in qualifying singles, advanced to the main draw with a 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (5) win over Sarah Henderson of Penn State in the first round and a 6-4, 6-4 win over Burce Kurkan of Maryland in the second round. She joins five other Cavaliers in the main draw, all of whom are seeded.

Vaez and Riley Blanks (Santa Barbara, Calif.) reached the main draw with a pair of qualifying wins. They topped Henderson and McCarthy of Penn State 8-5 and top-seeded Bailey and Kucin of Marshall 8-4. They join three other Virginia teams in the main draw.

The tournament continues Friday and runs through Sunday.
