Postgame Quotes

Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan
Opening Statement
“I was hoping that we would come in to this game and focus on the task at hand. I did not want us thinking about the future or the past, I just wanted us to stay with USC Upstate. It’s hard to do with Tennessee coming up, but I thought our team did a great job of it. I think they did a good job of focusing, although I was not happy with our defensive play after we started substituting. I decided to cut the numbers down and went with some toughness, and that is what really put the game away for us in the second half.”

On Chelsea Shine’s play
“I think Chelsea really had an epiphany at the end of last year. She decided that she wanted to be a leader on this team, and I was really pleased with our last meeting before the summer about leadership. She really wants to be the person to step up and help Monica [Wright]. Even though she is not a captain, she is a player who helps a lot verbally on the court because she can see everything. She spent a lot of time studying the game and working on her game all summer long. She’s been getting stronger and starting to make an impact on our team.”

On Sunday’s game against Tennessee
“I’m very excited. How could you not be excited about a great regional rivalry and a great match-up? Our next three games are very tough. We have a very tough stretch coming up. I’ve watched [Tennessee’s] last two games, and they look bigger, stronger and faster. They look better than when we played them last year, but we’ll be ready.”

Sophomore guard Chelsea Shine
On being “in the zone”:
“Well, I guess in the beginning, I did. But, you know, I just play. If I miss it I miss it, if I make it I make it. I knew I was on, but like every other night you have Monica [Wright] who’s on, other players who are on, I don’t know, maybe it’s because it’s my birthday or something, I don’t know. Tonight, I just played.”

On playing on her birthday:
“Last year we played Tennessee on November 17th, a day before my birthday. And we won, so I still had a good birthday.”

On the upcoming game vs. Tennessee:
“Last year they were a young team, if you look at the season that they ended up having. But at the same time we are a different team as well, it’s a new season and a new year. I think that it’s going to be hard; it’s going to be a good game. If we work really hard this week in practice, which I know we will, and we just go and give it our all I think that it should be a really good game and I know that we have a big crowd coming in, it is going to be an awesome environment.”

On the total team effort vs. USC Upstate:
“It was really good for us because we were able to run a lot, and that is when we’re best, when we’re running and when we’re getting transitions. I love to run, love to get out there with the guards. I think that’s maybe where it was easy for me, just running. But that gets tiring. Getting stops on one end and being able to push the ball and just run, that’s the game we like to have.”
