Cavaliers Have Strong Opening Day at UVa Winter Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team opened its spring season Saturday as play began at the UVa Winter Invitational. The Cavaliers had a strong first day, winning two of three doubles matches and six of seven singles matches.
“It was great to get the season started,” said head coach Mark Guilbeau. “I know the players were excited to face some real competition. LSU is a feisty, spirited team. It was good to face that level immediately, as it is something that we are working on excelling at as well.”
All of Virginia’s matches Saturday came against LSU. In doubles, the Cavaliers won two of the three doubles matches played. In Flight B, Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) and Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla,.) topped Kaitlin Burns and Hannah Robinson 8-1. In Flight C, Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Katie Gater (Dunblane, Scotland) defeated Kylie Adamek and Nicole Kantor 8-3.
In singles, the Cavaliers won six of the seven matches of the day. In Flight A, No. 72 Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) downed No. 120 Whitney Wolf 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. In Flight B, LSU’s Kantor topped Fraser 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. In Flight C, Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) scored a 6-2, 6-1 win over Keri Frankenberger. Stevens defeated Burns 7-6, 6-1 in Flight D. Tomljanovic cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Robinson in Flight E. In Flight F, Gater won 6-2, 6-2 over Adamek and Neela Vaez (Perrysburg, Ohio) topped Sloane Mathis 6-2, 6-2.
“It was a good effort from everyone, as there was a lot of great tennis out there today,” said Guilbeau. “I was especially proud of Emily in how hard she fought in the day’s most competitive match.”
The tournament continues Sunday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club with play beginning at 10 a.m. Admission is free.
