Cavaliers Continue Play at UVa Winter Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team continued play in its first spring event of the season on Sunday at the UVa Winter Invitational. The Cavaliers went 2-1 in doubles and 5-2 in singles during Sunday’s action at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
All of Virginia’s doubles matches Sunday came against North Carolina. In doubles, the Cavaliers won two of the three doubles matches played. In Flight A, Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) defeated Jocelyn Ffriend and Haley Hemm 8-6. Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) and Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) teamed for their second win of the weekend in Flight B, topping Zoe De Bruycker and Gina Suarez-Malaguti 8-1.
In singles, the Cavaliers won five of the seven matches of the day. In Flight A, No. 72 Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over De Bruycker. In Flight C, Vierra posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Suarez-Malaguti. Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton. Fla.) defeated Hemm 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 in Flight D, Katie Gater (Dunblane, Scotland) topped Ffriend 7-6, 6-3 in Flight E and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) downed LSU’s Sloane Mathis 8-3 in Flight F.
The tournament concludes Monday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club with play beginning at 9 a.m. Admission is free.
