CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia relief pitcher Kevin Arico (Jr., Flemington, N.J.) has been selected to the Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List, presented by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Arico is one of 40 players who have been named to the initial watch list.

Arico went 2-3 last season with 11 saves and a 2.70 earned run average. In 36.2 innings, he allowed 29 hits and just six walks while striking out 47. Batters hit just .218 against him. Arico was on the mound in the ninth inning to close out Virginia’s ACC, Irvine Regional and Oxford Super Regional championships.

The initial list will be updated with a mid-season release the week of April 19, including the national saves leaders. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 2, prior to start of NCAA regional tournament competition.

The NCBWA’s All-America Committee then will select the winner, with this year’s recipient to be announced on the opening day of the College World Series on June 19.

Virginia, ranked No. 2 in the preseason by Baseball America, opens the 2010 season Feb. 19-21 with a three-game series at No. 18 East Carolina.
