CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia track and field team heads to New York City for back-to-back events this weekend. The Cavaliers will field a 4x800m relay team at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden at 8:45 p.m. on Friday, before heading to The Armory on Saturday to compete in the NYRR Saturday Night at The Armory II. Events are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The Cavaliers are coming off a weekend that saw sophomore Vincenzo Chiariello break the school record in the weight throw, while senior Stephanie Garcia and sophomore Maureen Laffan each provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in their respective events.

Holding the third-best mile time in the nation – and top in the ACC – Garcia ran the program’s seventh-fastest time of 4:45.73 to finish runner-up in the event at the Hokie Invitational. The following day, Laffan threw the program’s fourth-best mark in the shot put, 49′ 11.75″, and ranks 28th nationally.

Chiariello passed Thom McKinney’s mark atop of the weight throw (60′ 5.75″ from 1991) with his effort of 61′ 2.25″.

Following this trip to NYC, the Cavaliers will take a weekend off before returning to the Big Apple for the Virginia Duals at The Armory on Saturday, Feb. 13.
