Virginia Softball's Cavalier Invitational Moved to CNU

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team’s Cavalier Invitational Tournament scheduled for Friday, Feb. 26 – Sunday, Feb. 28 has been moved to Christopher Newport University (CNU) in Newport News, Va., because of unplayable conditions at The Park.

George Washington, Lehigh, Notre Dame, and Ohio were scheduled to be part of the Cavalier Invitational. George Washington, Notre Dame, and Virginia will play games at CNU’s Captains Park on Friday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, Feb. 27, in a round robin format. Meanwhile, Lehigh and Ohio will play games at Longwood University in Farmville, Va.

Three games will be played on Friday, Feb. 26, at CNU, starting at 9 a.m. The second and third games of the day will start 25 minutes following the conclusion of the previous game. Three games will also be played on Saturday, Feb. 27, at CNU, starting at 10 a.m. Games two and three will follow 25 minutes after the conclusion of the previous game. George Washington, Notre Dame, and Virginia will each play four games over two days.

Information on the games at Longwood University involving Lehigh, Longwood, and Ohio will be announced by those institutions at a later date.

After a record amount of snow fell in Charlottesville this winter, coupled with below-average temperatures, the playing surface at The Park is not yet in suitable playing condition. Virginia athletics department staff first looked into moving the games to a facility closer to Charlottesville. However, fields at the available facilities closer to Charlottesville are also unplayable because of the recent winter storms.

“I appreciate the willingness of each of the six institutions involved to find a way for the softball teams to play these regularly scheduled games,” said Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage. “I would especially like to thank the Christopher Newport University and Longwood University softball teams and athletics department staffs for their willingness to accommodate these teams and their fans. I know this is particularly inconvenient for our fans. I appreciate their understanding and support.”

Admission will not be charged for all softball games held at CNU’s Captains Park.
