BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia track and field team concluded competition Saturday at the 2010 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers captured two more individual conference titles, earning five All-ACC performances and shattering one school record. Throughout the weekend, Virginia won two relays and three individual titles and finished with 13 all-conference performers.

Sophomore Maureen Laffan and freshman Robby Andrews each won their first-ever individual ACC titles in the shot put and 800m, respectively, while junior Adams Abdulrazaaq shattered the school record with his all-conference finish in the 60m hurdles. Sophomore All-American Lance Roller also earned All-ACC honors, finishing runner-up in the 800m and junior Marcus Robinson grabbed all-conference accolades in the triple jump.

Laffan claimed the shot put crown with a personal-best throw of 52’ 4.75”, just 6.25 inches shy of the school record held by Billie-Jo Grant at 53’ 0” in 2008. She also becomes just the second Cavalier female to win an ACC Championship indoors in the shot put, as Kelly Bodiford was the first in 1991.

On the track, Andrews became the fourth Cavalier to win the 800m at the indoor championship and is the first since McGavock Dunbar won in 2005. He captured his first-ever individual league crown with a finish of 1:50.73 and was followed across the line by Roller, who finished runner-up with a time of 1:51.21.

Junior Adams Abdulrazaaq also earned All-ACC honors, shattering the school record in the 60m hurdles and finished third with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.88. Former Cavalier Jarrett Hagwood previously held Virginia’s all-time mark at 7.93 from 2002.

In the triple jump, junior Marcus Robinson earned his first all-conference accolade indoors, leaping a personal-best 51’ 1” – the program’s fifth-best mark of all-time. His mark provisionally qualifies him for NCAAs.

To open the day, Virginia scored two Cavaliers in the men’s mile – freshman Zach Vrhovac and junior transfer John Minen, while redshirt freshman Tasia Potasinksi scored in the women’s mile. Vrhovac finished fourth in 4:10.65, while Minen took sixth in 4:11.84. Potasinski finished sixth with a personal-best time of 4:51.49.

Junior Ryan Collins – coming off his second-straight ACC Championship in the 5000m – scored in the 3000m, finishing fourth in 8:13.73, while freshman Emily Vannoy scored in the shot put. Vannoy became the fifth Cavalier all-time to hit the 50-foot mark in the event, throwing 50’ 7.25” to provisionally qualify for NCAAs and finish fourth at the meet.
Florida State’s men won the ACC Championship team title with 107 points, while North Carolina finished second with 103.5 points. Virginia Tech was third with 97 points and Virginia took fourth with 77 points.

On the women’s side, Clemson won the team title with 145.5 points and Florida State finished second with 93 points. Virginia Tech rounded out the top three with 74 points. The Cavaliers finished 10th with 33 points.

Next weekend, Virginia will return to Blacksburg or head to South Bend, Ind., for one final competition of the indoor season prior to the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Virginia Tech Last Chance and Notre Dame Last Chance events will run on Friday and Saturday at the respective sites.
