DURHAM, N.C. – The 18th-ranked Virginia women’s basketball team fell on the road at No. 6 Duke, 83-65, Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) led the Cavaliers with 27 points, five rebounds and four steals.

“I thought we had a good start in the game,” Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan said. “We had a lot of energy and we made them play outside their comfort zone in the first half. In the second half, they seemed to have more energy than we did.”

The loss dropped UVa’s record to 20-8 overall and 8-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Duke improved to 24-4 overall and 12-1 in the ACC and clinched the regular-season title.

Jasmine Thomas finished with 21 points to lead Duke. The Blue Devils led, 34-32, at the half, but opened the second half on a 17-4 run to take a 51-36 lead at the 14:51 mark. Virginia did not cut the lead to single digits the rest of the way.

The Cavaliers were out-rebounded, 41-35.

In addition to Wright’s 27 points (her 19th 20-point game of the season), Paulisha Kellum (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) also scored in double digits. Kellum had 13 points and five boards, while Shine chipped in 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks.

Virginia wraps up the regular season with a Sunday game vs. Virginia Tech. Tip-off is 1 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena. Senior guard Monica Wright will be honored as part of Senior Day festivities.
