CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (4-7) will host the Cavalier Classic this weekend, a round-robin event including the Cavaliers, Columbia and Delaware State.

On Saturday, Columbia and Delaware State will open the tournament with an 11 a.m. contest, followed by Virginia and Delaware State at 1:30 p.m. The Cavaliers will face Columbia at 4 p.m. On Sunday, March 7, Virginia will play Columbia at 12:30 p.m. and Delaware State at 3 p.m. The Hornets and Lions open the day with a 10 a.m. contest. Admission to the Cavalier Classic and all games at The Park is free.

Virginia is coming off a 2-2 weekend at the Cavalier Invitational, which was held last weekend at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. The Cavaliers recorded two wins over George Washington (9-0 and 6-0) but dropped two games to Notre Dame (11-3 and 9-0). UVa’s midweek games scheduled at Hampton were cancelled because of inclement weather.

Senior Sarah Tacke leads UVa at the plate this season with a team best .375 batting average, in addition to two home runs and five RBI. Teammate Nicole Koren also contributes at team-best four home runs and eight RBI to go along with her .367 average. Sophomore Clara Kendall is also hitting .259 and is coming off a solid weekend at plate. Meanwhile, pitcher Melanie Mitchell has three of the team’s wins in the circle; she has 42 strikeouts in 41 2/3 innings of work.

Columbia will begin its 2010 campaign this weekend in Charlottesville; Delaware State is 4-0 on the season. It will be the first meetings for Virginia with both the Lions and Hornets.
