Cavaliers Wrap Up Final Competition Before NCAA Indoor Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Adams Abdulrazaaq led the Virginia track and field team in its final weekend of competition prior to the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, bettering his already school record time in the 60m hurdles.
Abdulrazaaq finished runner-up at the Virginia Tech Last Chance meet with a time of 7.85 to improve his NCAA provisional qualifying mark – and school record time – in the 60m hurdles, while junior John Minen ran the program’s second-fastest mile time at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Minen hit the NCAA provisional mark in the mile by finishing sixth in 4:02.77. His time was the fastest by a Cavalier since Vince Draddy set the school record with a handheld time of 3:59.2 from 1982.
In addition, Minen was joined by senior Alex Bowman in the event, who finished with the program’s eighth-best time of 4:05.48.
Junior Marcus Robinson also hit a personal-best mark on the day, leaping 51’ 3.75” in the triple jump at Virginia Tech to marking the second time he’s bettered the NCAA provisional standard in the event this season. With his jump, he finished fifth and moved into a tie for fourth with Chike Chukwulozie’s mark from 1991 on Virginia’s all-time records.
In the marquee event of Notre Dame’s Last Chance competition – the Alex Wilson 800m – Roller finished 13th in 1:49.73, hitting the NCAA provisional mark for a second time this season.
At Notre Dame last night, Virginia’s distance medley relay team hit the NCAA provisional mark, running 9:37.92. The Cavaliers’ relay consisted of Minen, sophomore Kevin Anding, sophomore All-American Sintayehu Taye and freshman Zach Vrhovac.
Virginia has compiled 12 NCAA provisional qualifying performances this season, while redshirt sophomore Ryan Collins hit the NCAA automatic mark in the 5000m. Collins will head to Fayetteville, Ark., for the NCAA Indoor Championships held on March 12-13, while the rest of the qualified Cavaliers will await word of an at large bid into the national championships, scheduled to be announced by the NCAA on Monday at 7 p.m.
