CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (12-9, 2-0 ACC) steps away from conference play to compete this weekend in the prestigious Judi Garman Invitational. The event begins Thursday in Fullerton, Calif., and the Cavaliers will play against five different teams, including three ranked squads. All games will be played at the dual diamond Titan Softball Complex.

Virginia opens the tournament at 9 a.m. PDT (12 p.m. EDT) Thursday against No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette.

Virginia is coming off two league victories over Maryland last Sunday. Senior Sarah Tacke and freshman Melanie Mitchell were named ACC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, after the Cavaliers earned 3-1 and 5-3 victories over the Terrapins.

Tacke leads UVa at the plate this season with a .471 average, including a team-best 19 RBI. Abby Snyder is hitting .359 while Nicole Koren averages .321 and leads the team with six home runs. Mitchell has a team-best eight wins in the circle and has 96 strikeouts in 80.2 innings of work.
