Virginia Opens Outdoor Season at George Mason
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia track and field team opens up its 2010 outdoor season this weekend, heading to Fairfax, Va., for the Mason Quadrangular on Saturday. Field events will begin at 10 a.m., with track events starting at noon. The women’s 4x400m relay will conclude competition at 3:35 p.m.
The Cavaliers wrapped up their 2010 indoor season this past weekend with freshman Robby Andrews winning the NCAA title in the 800m and sophomore Ryan Collins earning All-America honors in the 5000m.
Throughout the indoor season, Virginia had three individual ACC Champions and two relay championship teams, while the Cavaliers met 12 NCAA provisional qualifying marks and one automatic mark. Collins – the two-time ACC Champion in the 5k – met the auto mark in the 5k, while Andrews – the 800m ACC Champion – and sophomore All-American Lance Roller hit the provisional mark in the 800m. Junior All-American Catherine White met the provisional time in the 3000m and 5000m, while senior Stephanie Garcia and junior John Minen ran faster than the provisional mark in the mile.
Junior Adams Abdulrazaaq broke the school record with his provisional qualifying time in the 60m hurdles and the Cavaliers’ men’s distance medley relay team of Minen, sophomore Kevin Anding, sophomore All-American Sintayehu Taye and freshman Zach Vrhovac met the NCAA’s provisional mark on their final competition of the season in the relay. Both of Virginia’s men’s and women’s DMR teams won conference titles at the ACC Indoor Championships on Feb. 26.
In the field events, sophomore Maureen Laffan – the ACC Champion in the shot put – and freshman Emily Vannoy threw the provisional mark in the shot put, while junior Greg Nelson cleared the provisional mark in the high jump and junior Marcus Robinson leaped further than the mark in the triple jump.
The Cavaliers will use four weekend competitions to prepare for the 2010 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held in Clemson, S.C., on April 15-17. This year’s NCAA East Regional will be held in Greensboro, N.C., on May 28-29, before Virginia heads to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.
