CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior tennis player Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) was named the ACC Men’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week, conference officials announced Tuesday. Shabaz, who shares the award with Duke’s Henrique Cunha, helped the top-ranked Cavaliers to wins over Maryland and Baylor last week.

At Maryland, Shabaz defeated Tommy Laine in straight sets at the No. 1 singles position and teamed with Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) to win at No. 1 doubles. Against eighth-ranked Baylor, the 17th-ranked duo of Shabaz and Courtney topped No. 33 Jordan Rux and Maros Horny in doubles. In singles, fourth-ranked Shabaz ranked two-time Baylor All-American Denes Lukacs, ranked 16th nationally, his most lopsided loss in over two years, 6-3, 6-2.

The award is the second of Shabaz’s career, as he was honored on Jan. 26. It is the third award for a Cavalier this season as Courtney was honored on Feb. 16.

The Cavaliers (20-1) host five matches this week. On Wednesday, Virginia welcomes a pair of in-state rivals, VCU at 3 p.m. and Richmond at 6 p.m. The Cavaliers return to ACC action on Friday against Miami at 4 p.m. On Sunday, Virginia has another doubleheader with Florida State at noon and Delaware at 4 p.m. Admission to all home Virginia tennis matches is free.
