CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia’s Varsity Eight was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Crew of the Week for the second straight week Tuesday (April 6) after defeating a pair of nationally ranked teams Saturday on Lake Monticello.

The Cavaliers’ Varsity Eight crew, ranked second nationally in the latest poll by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA), posted a time of 6:32.5 to beat 10th-ranked Michigan (6:41.1) on Saturday morning. Virginia’s Varsity Eight then posted a time of 6:46.7 in the afternoon session to defeat the 12th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (6:59.8).

The wins for Virginia’s crew gives it triumphs over five nationally ranked teams in its last two regattas.

The First Varsity Eight crew of Virginia is composed of coxswain Sidney Thorsten (Atlanta, Ga.), Jennifer Cromwell (Bellevue, Wash.), Summers Nelson (Kansas City, Mo.), Desiree Burns (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), Katrin Reinert (Stuttgart, Germany), Martha Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.), Kristine O’Brien (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), Nora Phillips (Arlington, Va.) and Helen Tompkins (Friendswood, Tex.).
