Andrews Breaks Meet Record in Mile at Lou Onesty Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In front of 710 fans, freshman Robby Andrews opened his 2010 outdoor track and field season running a personal-best 4:01.53 in the mile run to break the meet record set by former Cavalier All-American Andrew Jesien at 4:02.18 last season. The event capped off the opening day of the annual Lou Onesty Invitational at Lannigan Field.

Andrews was followed across the line by a slew of runners who finished within one-second of each other. Post-collegiate competitor Michael Hendry finished second in 4:07.16, while freshman Zach Vrhovac was third in 4:07.18 and senior Alex Bowman was 4:07.56. Senior Trey Miller claimed fifth with a time of 4:08.06.

In field events, sophomore Tara Karin and freshman Pearl Bickersteth won the javelin and high jump, respectively. On the windy day, Karin threw 140’1” for top honors, while Bickersteth cleared 5’ 5.25” for first.

Freshman Robert Guider had a personal-best day in the hammer throw – heaving 180’7” to move into second on Virginia’s all-time program records. He now trails just Bill Johnston, who threw 189’ 11” in 2000.

On the women’s side, sophomore Erin Wykoff threw a personal-best 156’ 7” in the hammer to move into sixth on the program’s record board.

Competition will continue tomorrow, beginning with field events at 10 a.m. Track events will begin at noon, with the entire meet wrapping up around 4 p.m. Following competition, the Cavaliers will hold their official adoption ceremony for Jonah Terry – a young child affiliated with the Friends of Jaclyn program.
