CHARLOTTESVILLE – The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team topped ran its win streak to 25 consecutive matches with a 7-0 win over No. 47 NC State Friday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers (28-1, 8-0) also extended their ACC win streak to 55 consecutive matches and their home winning streak to 70 consecutive matches.

Virginia took the 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point from the Wolfpack (13-10, 1-7 ACC). All three Cavalier teams were down an early break, but Virginia rallied for wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) topped Dominic Hodgson and Freddy Prandecki 9-7 at the top position, while Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) and Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) downed Jaime Pulgar and Dave Thomson 8-6 at No. 2.

In singles, the Cavaliers swept all six matches, five in straight sets. Highlighting the singles wins were a pair of milestone wins. Singh and Barrick each recorded their 100th career singles win, becoming the sixth and seventh players in school history to accomplish the feat. They join Somdev Devvarman (158 wins), Treat Huey (129), Brian Vahaly (125), Rylan Rizza (123) and Darrin Cohen (100) as members of the 100 singles win club. Barrick, who recorded his 110th career doubles win earlier in day, became the fourth Cavalier with at least 100 wins in both singles and doubles (Devvarman, Huey, and Cohen). Barrick’s win was a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Akash Gujarati at No. 5, while Singh topped Hodgson 6-1, 7-6(4) at No. 2.

Also recording straight set wins for the Cavaliers were Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.), who topped Rafael Paez 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3, Shabaz, who defeated Pulgar 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1, and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.), who downed David Chermak 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6. Courtney completed the sweep with his 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Thomson at No. 4 singles.

Singh and Barrick weren’t the only Cavaliers that reached a milestone on Friday. The win was the 229th of head coach Brian Boland’s career at Virginia, tying the school wins record set by Carl Rohmann (1936-40, 1946-63) and matched by Homer Richards (1976-89).

The Cavaliers conclude the home portion of their regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader. Virginia hosts No. 18 Wake Forest at 1 p.m. and Hampton at 5 p.m.
