ATLANTA – The Virginia softball team (23-17, 7-4 ACC) was defeated by No. 10/6 Georgia Tech (34-6, 10-1 ACC) 8-0 in five innings Sunday at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets earned the sweep over the Cavaliers after winning a doubleheader on Saturday; it marked the first series loss in conference play for the Orange and Blue.

Georgia Tech outhit the Cavaliers 8-2 for the contest. Seniors Nicole Koren and Sarah Tacke each recorded singles.

The Yellow Jackets had a solid start, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to take a 6-0 lead. GT then scored a run in the third and another in the bottom of the fifth, which proved to be the walk-off run.

Freshman Melanie Mitchell took the loss for Virginia, tossing 1 2/3 innings and allowing six runs on four hits. Teammate Stephanie Coates come on to pitch for the remainder of the game. She gave up two runs on four hits.

Georgia Tech’s Jessica Coan moved to 10-1 on the year in the circle, earning the win. She pitched all five innings and tallied six strikeouts.

Virginia will play a make-up doubleheader at Hampton Wednesday. Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
