CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Virginia junior goalie Adam Ghitelman was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week for the period ending on April 11. Ghitelman becomes the fourth Cavalier to be honored this year, tying North Carolina for most this season by any league member.

The Syosset, N.Y., native led the top-ranked Cavaliers to a 7-5 triumph over the second-ranked Tar Heels in front of 25,710 fans at the Konica Minolta Big City Classic inside the New Meadowlands Stadium. The victory gave UVa a share of the ACC regular season crown.

The record crowd for a regular season lacrosse-only game saw Ghitelman record 12 saves on 47 shots taken. UNC came into the game averaging 12.5 goals per game in its previous eight contests and Ghitelman held the Tar Heels to a season-low five goals. In addition, Ghitelman initiated UVa’s success on 17-of-18 (94.4) clears against a strong Carolina team that had limited opponents to a 75.2 percent success rate on clears heading into the contest.

The honor is Ghitelman’s first of the season and the second of his career while becoming the fourth Cavalier to be honored with ACC Player of the Week honors this season. Ghitelman also earned ACC Player of the Week accolades on March 31, 2009 after saving a career-high 22 shots in the seven-overtime victory against Maryland. The goalie also received National Player of the Week honors for his exploits that week.

Other Cavaliers honored with the ACC weekly award in 2010 are -Chris Bocklet, who took home ACC Co-Player of the Week honors on April 5 after a four goal effort at then No. 4 Maryland. Rhamel Bratton was named ACC Co-Player of the Week on March 8 after his career-high four-goal performance against then No. 1 Syracuse. Steele Stanwick was named ACC Player of the Week on Feb. 22 after scoring three goals at Drexel in the season opener.
