Finley and Vannoy Earn Runner-Up Finishes on Second Day of ACCs

CLEMSON, S.C. – Junior Steve Finley and freshman Emily Vannoy led the Virginia track and field team on the second day of competition at the 2010 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Clemson’s Rock Norman Complex, both earning runner-up finishes in their respective events. In preliminary competition, Virginia advanced 11 Cavaliers to tomorrow’s finals.

Finley earned his second-straight All-ACC honor in the steeplechase, finishing second with a time of 8:56.11 to Duke’s Ryan McDermott, who edged Finley by one one-hundredth of a second and claimed a time of 8:56.01.

In the shot put, Vannoy finished runner-up with a personal-best throw of 51’ 2.5” to earn her first All-ACC honor.

In preliminary events, Virginia qualified five Cavaliers for the finals of the 1500m and four in the 800m. Senior Alex Bowman advanced in both events, winning his 1500m heat in 3:32.06 and finishing the 800m in 1:50.85.

Freshman All-American Robby Andrews will take the top seed time of 1:50.56 into the finals of the 800m, while sophomore All-American Lance Roller won his heat of the prelims in 1:53.12. On the women’s side, senior Ariane Sloan advanced with a time of 2:11.09.

In the men’s 1500m, Bowman will be joined by sophomore All-American Sintayehu Taye, who finished with a time of 3:52.39, and freshman Brett Johnson, who claimed a time of 3:53.88.

On the women’s side, redshirt freshmen Tasia Potasinski and Rosemary Barber both advanced to the finals. Potasinski finished the prelims with a time of 4:30.12, while Barber finished in 4:33.78.

Junior Adams Abdulrazaaq also qualified for the finals of two events. The defending ACC Champion in the 110m hurdles, Abdulrazaaq finished the event with a time of 13.87. He also advanced to the finals of the 400m hurdles, finishing with a time of 51.99.

Transfer senior All-American Steve Delice will join Abdulrazaaq in the 400m hurdles, taking the top seed time of 51.41 into the finals. His mark ranks fourth on Virginia’s all-time program records.

Sophomore Kevin Anding will round out the Cavaliers competing in tomorrow’s finals, as he advanced in the 400m with a time of 47.30.

In today’s finals, sophomore Maureen Laffan used a throw of 49’ 9.25” to finish fourth in the shot put, while redshirt freshman Matt Meyer scored for the Cavaliers, taking sixth in the long jump with a leap of 22’ 9.25”.

Sophomore Andrew Revelle finished eighth in the steeplechase with a time of 9:18.79.

The Cavaliers enter the final day of competition in third place on both sides. The men’s squad has collected 37 points, while the women have accumulated 34.

Florida State leads the men with 41 points, while North Carolina edged the Cavaliers by one point for second place with 38 points.

On the women’s side, Clemson leads the way with 65 points, while Florida State sits second with 38 points.

Events tomorrow will begin with the women’s pole vault at 11 a.m. Competition on the track will start with the men’s 4x100m relay at 3 p.m.
