PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior All-American Meghan Briggs opened competition at the 116th running of the Penn Relays with a runner-up finish in the championship section of the javelin. Sophomore Sean Keveren also picked up a runner-up finish, as he wrapped up opening day competition with a second-place finish in the Olympic Development section of the 5000m.

Briggs, the 2009 Penn Relays champion used a throw of 157’ 3” to finish behind Penn State’s All-American Karlee McQuillen, who threw 162’ 7” for the title, while Keveren clocked in with a personal-best time of 14:10.00. Keveren finished runner-up to Keystone Elite’s Ryan Blood, who crossed in 14:02.17.

In other field events, freshman Emily Vannoy threw a personal-best 50’ 2” in the college shot put to finish sixth, while sophomore Maureen Laffan took eighth in the same competition with a mark of 49’ 3.5”.

In the college javelin, sophomore Tara Karin threw 141’ 0” to finish fifth, while sophomore Erin Wykoff finished eighth in the college discus. Wykoff finished with a mark of 148’ 5” and freshman Pearl Bickersteth cleared 5’ 4.5” in the high jump.

Virginia’s distance medley relay kicked off events on the track at historic Franklin Field with a third place finish in 11:26.41. The Cavaliers’ quartet consisted of redshirt freshman Rosemary Barber, junior Chidi Uche, senior Ariane Sloan and redshirt freshman Tasia Potasinski.

Junior Andrew Revelle finished sixth in the college section of the steeplechase in a personal-best 9:10.44.

Virginia will continue Penn Relays competition tomorrow, with freshman Dallas Rose competing in the college triple jump at 11 a.m., and the Cavaliers’ Championship of America DMR squad wrapping up events for the day at 4 p.m.
