CHARLOTTESVILLE – The third-ranked Virginia rowing team swept five races against Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon at the Rivanna Reservoir. The Cavaliers won the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, Second Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight races.

Following the regatta, the UVa senior class of Pamela “Frosty” Baylor, Desiree Burns, Jennifer Cromwell, Lauren Hutchins, Marie Long, Summers Nelson, Sarah Pichardo, Nora Phillips and Helen Tompkins was honored for its four years worth of accomplishments.

Coming into Saturday’s races, UVa was ranked No. 3 by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) and USRowing. The Quakers were receiving votes.

“We want to really thank Penn for coming down,” UVa head coach Kevin Sauer said. “I’m pleased in a general sense because everyone raced well and aggressively.”

Virginia’s Varsity Eight of coxswain Sidney Thorsten, Jennifer Cromwell, Katrin Reinert, Desiree Burns, Kristine O’Brien, Martha Kuzzy, Helen Tompkins, Nora Phillips and Summers Nelson finished with a first-place time of 6:48.5, compared to Penn’s time of 7:16.0.

In the Second Varsity Eight, Virginia (coxswain Cristine Candland, Victoria Burke, Lauren Shook, Keziah Beall, Sarah Borchelt, Lauren Hutchins, Christine Roper, Claudia Blandford, Inge Janssen) won with a time of 7:12.1. Penn’s time was 7:34.7.

Virginia’s Varsity Four was also victorious over Penn, winning with a time of 8:05.9. UVa’s Varsity Four was coxswain Sarah Pichardo, MacKenzie Leahy, Hunter Terry, Ruth Retzinger and Betsy Nilan.

In the Second Varsity Four, Virginia ‘A’ took first place (7:56.9), Virginia ‘B’ finished second (8:21.1) and Penn was third (8:37.6).

In the Third Varsity Eight, Virginia won with a time of 7:01.8. UVa’s Novice Eight was second with a time of 7:17.6, Penn was third with a time of 7:32.2 and UVa’s Second Novice Eight was fourth with a time of 7:46.8.

Following the race, in addition to the Senior Day ceremony, Virginia held a dedication ceremony for its newest racing eight. The boat is named after the late Dr. Armando J. Lauritano, Medicine ’34. Dr. Lauritano’s wife, Catherine, and son, Paul, were in attendance for the ceremony. Dr. Lauritano’s granddaughter, Francesca, is a sophomore rower for UVa.

Up next, the Cavaliers head to the 2010 South/Central Regional Championships, being held May 15-16 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
