CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team had four individuals selected to compete in the 2010 NCAA Individual Championships, to be held May 26-31 at the Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Ga. Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.), Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.), Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) received selections to the 64-player singles field, while the team of Courtney-Shabaz was selected to the 32-team doubles field.

The four players in the singles field sets a Virginia school record, breaking the previous high of three set in 2005 and matched in 2008 and 2009. The four competitors are the most for any school since Georgia had four participants in 2007.

Shabaz is making his second NCAA singles appearance and is seeded for the first time. A 9-16 seed in this year’s tournament, Shabaz went 29-9 in singles play and is currently ranked No. 11 nationally.

Singh is also making his second NCAA singles appearance, while also being seeded for the first time. A 9-16 seed, Singh went 34-5 in singles play this season and he is currently ranked No. 14 nationally. Last year in his NCAA Singles Championship debut, Singh reached the semifinals.

Courtney is making his first NCAA singles appearance. This season he has posted a 38-7 singles record and is ranked No. 46 nationally.

Jenkins becomes the first Cavalier freshman to be selected to the NCAA Singles Championship since Somdev Devvarman in 2005. He went 30-8 during his rookie campaign and is ranked No. 57 nationally.

The team of Courtney and Shabaz is making its first NCAA doubles appearance. They have posted an 18-3 record this season and are currently ranked No. 14 nationally. Last year, Shabaz won the NCAA Doubles Championship with Dominic Inglot.

Virginia, the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Team Championship, opens play May 15-16 as it hosts first and second action at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers (35-1) meet Navy in the first round, with Wake Forest and Columbia also competing in the Charlottesville Regional.
