Cavaliers Remain Near Top of Leaderboard at West Regional

Stanford, CA – The 13th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team is in fourth place entering Saturday’s final round of play at the NCAA West Regional Championship at the Stanford Golf Course. The top eight teams from the tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships.
Virginia shot 21-over 305 during Friday’s second round of play to complete the event’s first 36 holes at 28-over 596. Arizona, ranked No. 7, leads the field at 17-over 585. Top-ranked UCLA trails its Pac-10 rival by four shots. Alabama, ranked No. 6, is one shot ahead of UVa in the standings.
Calle Nielson leads the Cavaliers through 36 holes at 1-over 143. She is tied for third place after shooting even par during the second round. Brittany Altomare carded a 4-over 75 and is seventh overall at 145. Nicole Agnello shot 79 and is 48th at 152. Joy Kim posted an 80 Friday and is 73rd at 156. Lauren Greenlief is 85th overall at 158, including an 82 during the second round.
The final two holes were especially costly to UVa’s final score. The Cavaliers finished that stretch at seven-over par.
“The conditions were more windy today, the course played tougher and that was reflective in most of the team’s scores today,” said UVa coach Kim Lewellen. “I though the girls hit the ball well and played well, we just had a tough finish. I think they were a little tired there at the end. I feel confident they will play well in the final round.”
San Jose State’s Madeleine Ziegert continues to lead the field at 1-under 141. She is one stroke ahead of LSUs Megan McChrystal.
During Saturday’s final round the Cavaliers will be teamed with California and LSU. Those teams will tee off starting at 9:06 a.m. PT from the 10th tee. Live scoring of the tournament is online at Golfstat.com.
