BLACKSBURG, Va. – The second-seeded Virginia softball team (33-21, 13-7 ACC) fell 1-0 in eight innings to No. 7 seed Virginia Tech (25-32, 8-13 ACC) Friday in the ACC Championship.

The Cavaliers have been eliminated from the tournament, as the event is single elimination.

Virginia Tech scored the winning run in the top of the eighth inning, thanks to Ashton Ward’s RBI single to center to score teammate Ella Miller.

The Hokies outhit Virginia 6-5 in the contest. Sarah Tacke led the way with two singles while Lauren McCaskey, Clara Kendall and Taylor Williams also had singles.

Freshman Melanie Mitchell, a first-team all-conference selection, tossed all eight innings and did not allow an earned run. She finished with three strikeouts and three walks.

VT’s Kenzie Roark earned the victory in the circle. She also threw eight innings with four strikeouts and four walks.

Virginia will await a possible at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament when the bracket is announced at 10 p.m. Sunday. It would be the first trip to the NCAA event for the Cavaliers.
