OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – On the first day of competition at the 2010 South/Central Regional Championships, being held on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., the third-ranked Virginia rowing team won four semifinal races and qualified for Sunday’s Grand Finals in every event.

Virginia’s Varsity Eight won both its afternoon semifinal and its morning heat, recording the fastest time of the day in the process. In the morning, UVa’s time of 6:37.10 was faster than second-place Iowa by more than 10 seconds. Then in the afternoon semifinal, Virginia’s Varsity Eight posted a time of 6:28.8, edging second-place and 10th-ranked Wisconsin (6:34.81).

Sunday’s Grand Final is scheduled for 11:50 a.m., and will feature Clemson, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Tennessee in addition to the Cavaliers.

In the Second Varsity Eight, Virginia also had two victories on the day. The Cavaliers won their heat (6:50.40) and then its semifinal (6:40.5). In the semifinal race, Virginia earned first place over Michigan (6:45.95) and Tennessee (6:48.95).

The Second Varsity Eight will race at 11:40 a.m. in the Grand Final, along with Tennessee, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan and Clemson.

Virginia’s Varsity Four won its morning heat and followed that up with a semifinal victory with a time of 7:21.20. In that race, second place went to Michigan State (7:27.78) and third place went to Clemson (7:29.55).

In Sunday’s Varsity Four Grand Final (11:20 a.m.), Virginia will race against Michigan State, Clemson, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa for the title.

All three of Virginia’s Open Four boats qualified for the semifinals by winning their respective heats in the morning. In the first semifinal, Virginia ‘B’ (7:36.10) edged Virginia ‘A’ (7:38.06) for first place, while Virginia ‘C’ rowed to a second-place finish in the second semifinal (7:44.8).

All three crews will row in Sunday’s Open Four Grand Final (10:40 a.m.), along with Wisconsin ‘A’, Clemson and Ohio State.

Additionally, Virginia’s Novice Eight qualified for Sunday’s Grand Final by virtue of its first-place finish in the morning heat. In that race, UVa’s time was 6:56.90. Sunday’s Novice Eight Grand Final will be at 11 a.m. and will feature Ohio State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin ‘A’, Michigan and Michigan State, in addition to the Cavaliers.
