CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia rowers Sarah Borchelt (Boston, Mass.), Summers Nelson (Kansas City, Mo.) and Nora Phillips (Arlington, Va.) have been named Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athletes for 2010, the organization announced Tuesday (May 25).

The requirements to be named a CRCA National Scholar-Athlete are as follows: the student-athlete has met all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, rowed in 75 percent of the current spring races and has had a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career.

Borchelt, a sophomore nursing major, rowed with the Second Varsity Eight that won the South/Central Regional Championship in 2010. At the ACC Championships, she was a member of the Varsity Four that won the conference title. This is the first scholar-athlete recognition for Borchelt.

Nelson, a senior commerce major, earned her second-consecutive scholar-athlete distinction, as she was also selected in 2009. Nelson rowed with the Varsity Eight this year that won the South/Central Regional Championship and the ACC Championship.

Phillips, a senior foreign affairs and environmental science major, was a member of the Varsity Eight that won the South/Central Regional Championship and the ACC Championship. Following the conference regatta, she was named to the All-ACC team. This is her first scholar-athlete recognition.

Virginia heads to the NCAA Championships on May 28-30 in Gold River, Calif.
