CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia track and field team will get the chance to vie for positions at the NCAA Outdoor Championships this weekend at the NCAA First Round in Greensboro, N.C. Virginia has qualified 25 athletes, who have all recorded marks this season that rank among the top-48 performances in the East Region, in 19 different events. Events will take place at North Carolina A&T’s Irwin Belk Track from Thursday through Saturday, with live results and a live webstream available at VirginiaSports.com.

Senior All-American Meghan Briggs holds the region’s top throw in the javelin this season and open competition for the Cavaliers on Thursday at 10 a.m. Sophomore Tara Karin will join Briggs in the event, while junior Andy Fahringer will compete on the men’s side.

In other throwing events, sophomore Maureen Laffan and freshman Emily Vannoy will throw the shot put, while Vannoy and sophomore Erin Wykoff will compete in the discus.

Events on the track will begin Thursday at 3:30 p.m., as All-American Steve Delice toes the line for the 400m hurdles. Juniors Adams Abdulrazaaq and Chidi Uche will also compete in hurdle events, with Abdulrazaaq racing the 110m hurdles and Uche competing in the 400m hurdles.

The Cavaliers will field three competitors in the 1500m – senior Alex Bowman, sophomore All-American Sintayehu Taye and redshirt freshman Tasia Potasinski – while two will compete in each of the 800m, 3000m steeplechase, 5000m and 10k.

Junior All-American Ryan Collins will compete in both the 5000m and 10k, while senior Trey Miller will also race the 10k and redshirt freshman Sean Keveren will compete in the 5000m. In the steeple, senior Steve Finley and junior Andrew Mearns will both toe the line, while the 800m race will feature two Cavalier All-Americans in sophomore Lance Roller and freshman Robby Andrews.

Sophomore Kevin Anding will round out competitors on the track, as he has qualified for the 400m.

In other field events, junior Greg Nelson and freshman Pearl Bickersteth will compete in the high jump, while junior Marcus Robinson and Dallas Rose will be in the triple jump. Redshirt freshman Matt Meyer will be the Cavaliers’ lone long jumper.

The top-12 finishers in each event will advance to the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. This year’s national meet will be held from June 9-12 at historic Hayward Field on the University of Oregon’s campus.
