CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia sophomore pitcher/first baseman Danny Hultzen (Bethesda, Md.) has been named one of 30 semifinalists for the 2010 Golden Spikes Award, which is presented to the top player in college baseball. Hultzen also is a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy.

Hultzen is 9-1 with an ACC-low 2.43 earned run average this season. In 92.2 innings, he has allowed 62 hits and 20 walks while striking out 111 batters. Opponents are batting just .184 against him this year.

Hultzen became Virginia’s first ACC Pitcher of the Year and was a first-team All-ACC selection this year. He has been consistently strong all season and has pitched at least six innings in 12 of his 14 starts. He ranks eighth nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (6.02) and 18th in strikeouts.

Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. The award has been presented each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship.
