CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Erica Cipolloni, an incoming student-athlete who will join the Virginia program in 2010-11, was recently named one of 42 participants invited to try out for the USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team. The tryouts will be held June 10-12 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

Camp opens Thursday evening with drills and four scrimmages are slated for Friday with an additional four games Saturday.

“How great is it to get the opportunity to compete for a spot on the USA Junior National Team?” Virginia head coach Eileen Schmidt said. “Erica is a competitor and so versatile; I think she has a great shot. As a team and staff we are really excited for her and wish her the best.”

The athletes trying out are age 18 and under and represent 13 states: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Utah. Cipolloni hails from Philadelphia.

The 17 players selected for the 2010 USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team will be announced on June 15. The team will compete later this year at the III Pan American Softball Championship (18-and-under), Aug. 6-15 in Bogota, Columbia. The event serves as a qualifier for the International Softball Federation (ISF) IX Junior Women’s World Championships (19-and-under) Dec. 6-17, 2011, in Cape Town, South Africa.

Former Virginia head coach Karen Johns will lead the Junior Women’s Team in Colombia.
