CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia freshman pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) was tabbed the state’s pitcher of the year as the 2010 VaSID University Division All-State Softball team was announced recently. Teammate Sarah Tacke (Merced, Calif.) was a first-team selection while Nicole Koren (Warminster, Pa.) was named to the second team.

Mitchell tied the school record with 27 wins this season, highlighted by wins over then-No. 2 Arizona and then-No. 4 Michigan. She was a first-team all-ACC and all-region honoree and finished the year with 295 strikeouts and a 2.86 ERA.

Tacke led Virginia at the plate this season with a .354 batting average. A first-team all-region and second-team all-ACC selection, the right fielder also boasted a squad-best 10 doubles and 43 RBI and was second on the team with 10 home runs.

Koren, selected as the designated/utility player on the second team, hit .296 this season for the Orange and Blue. She recorded a team-best 12 home runs and contributed 31 RBI.
