Cleveland, TN – Virginia rising senior Calle Nielson won the Tennessee Women’s Amateur Golf Championship this week in Cleveland, Tenn. Nielson defeated Ole Miss junior Ashley Lance, the newly crowned Women’s Southern Amateur Champion, 2 and 1 in the match play final.

The two-time Tennessee Golf Association’s player of the year, Nielson had not played in the tournament the past two years due to her summer playing schedule.

Nielson won the tournament’s qualifying by shooting 2-under 70 during the stroke play portion of the tournament. She cruised through the early match play rounds, winning 4 and 2, 7 and 6 and 5 and 4 before needing a 20-hole victory against Ashley Lance in the semifinals.

An All-ACC performer for UVa last season, Nielson became the first Cavalier to win an NCAA Regional. She was named an honorable mention All-American for the second consecutive year after helping Virginia to its third consecutive NCAA Championship appearance.
