CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia senior cornerback Ras-I Dowling was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List by the Maxwell Football Club (MFC) on Monday. Forty-five FBS schools from 11 conferences are on the Chuck Bednarik Watch List heading into the 2010 season.

Dowling enters his final season at UVa on three national award watch lists that are handed out by the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA). The Chesapeake, Va., native is also on the Nagurski Trophy and Thorpe Award Watch Lists.

The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented to the nation’s top defensive player since 1995. Mr. Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame ‘69 and the NFL Hall of Fame ‘67. Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh was the award’s winner in 2009.

Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced on November 8 and three finalists for each award will be announced November 22. The winner of the 2010 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show which will be held on December 9, 2010. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City on March 4, 2011.

The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s Selection Committee and the Maxwell Club reserves the right to make additions and subtractions to these lists as the 2010 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA Sports Information Directors, Head Coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for these awards.

Dowling is mentioned on the Nagurski Trophy watch list for the second-straight season after earning his second-straight second team All-ACC nod, anchoring the ACC’s No. 4 and the nation’s No. 21 pass defense in 2009. Dowling finished the season ranked No. 6 in the ACC in passes defended (11) and No. 11 in interceptions (three). After recording a career-high nine tackles, including his first career sack, against Indiana, Dowling earned the ACC Defensive Back of the Week nod by the league. He also averaged 3.4 tackles per game and had two tackles for loss. He is also a College Football Insider preseason All-American (second team).

Dowling enters his final season at UVa with eight career interceptions and 145 total tackles.
