Charlotte, NC – Virginia senior women’s golfer Calle Nielson won and Cavalier sophomore Brittany Altomare lost in the opening round of match play at the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at the Charlotte Country Club.

Nielson defeated Sarah Ababa of the Philippines 2&1 to move into the round of 32. Altomare fell 4&3 to Canadian Jennifer Kirby, who plays collegiate golf at Alabama.

Nielson is paired up against Aimee Neff of Carmel, Ind. in Thursday’s morning second round of match play. Neff is a rising senior at Michigan State. The duo is scheduled to start their match at 9 a.m. If Nielson wins she will play in the round of 16 at 1:40 p.m.
