CHARLOTTESVILLE – The reigning NCAA Champion UVa men’s soccer team opens its preseason schedule with an exhibition contest against VCU on Friday (Aug. 20). Kick-off from Klöckner Stadium is 4 p.m., prior to the Virginia women’s soccer team’s regular-season opener against Liberty (7 p.m.).

Tickets for Friday’s exhibition game are $4 for adults and $2 for youth/seniors. Reserved seats for the game are available for $6.

Virginia is unbeaten in its last 16 games (13-0-3), dating back to a 1-0 double-overtime loss at North Carolina on Oct. 2, 2009. The Cavaliers are also riding a 10-game unbeaten streak in Klöckner Stadium.

Friday’s match marks the first of three preseason exhibitions for the Cavaliers this year. On Monday, Aug. 23, Virginia hosts VMI at 7 p.m., and then travels to George Mason for a Saturday, Aug. 28, exhibition at 7 p.m.

The Cavaliers are ranked No. 2 in the preseason rankings released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Virginia returns 13 letterwinners and seven starters from the squad that won the 2009 NCAA Championship.

Offensively, Virginia returns seven players that tallied at least two points in 2009, including leading goal-scorer and Soccer America National Freshman of the Year Will Bates. Bates returns for his sophomore season after registering a team-high 12 goals and an assist.

Cavalier captains Greg Monaco and Mike Volk, along with 2009 first team All-American goalkeeper Diego Restrepo and Hunter Jumper, return on defense for UVa. Last season, the Cavaliers allowed just eight goals and Restrepo set school records for shutouts in a season (15), consecutive shutouts (11) and consecutive scoreless minutes (1176:51).

The regular season begins on Sept. 3 – a full day of soccer for fans. Virginia Tech and St. John’s square off in men’ soccer action at Klöckner Stadium at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Virginia women’s soccer team vs. Richmond at 5:30 p.m. The nightcap will be the ‘Hoos vs. UAB at 8 p.m.

The 2010 All-Soccer Reserved Season Pass (reserved seats for all home men’s and women’s games) is $90. The Men’s Soccer Reserved Season Pass is $50. General Admission All-Soccer Season Passes are also available for adults ($40), Youth/Senior ($30) and Faculty/Staff ($30).
