University Place, WA – Virginia senior golfer Amory Davis (Chadds Ford, Pa.) lost in the round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur Championship Thursday at Chambers Bay Golf Course. Brad Benjamin of Rockford, Ill. won the match 3&2 to move into the round of 16.

The two competitors, playing in the first tee time of the day, were all-square through three holes. Benjamin benefitted by a pair of birdies to go 5-up over the next seven holes. Davis fought back to bring the match to 2-up after 14 holes but Benjamin won the 15th hole and put the match away one hole later.

Davis advanced to the round of 32 by knocking off the tournament’s top seed, Jeff Wilson, in the opening round. Wilson won the event’s 36 holes of stroke play held on Monday and Tuesday.

The quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur are scheduled for Friday, the semifinal round on Saturday and the 36-hole final on Sunday.

Davis and his Cavalier teammates open their season Sept. 26 at The Fall Preview hosted this year by Oklahoma State.
