CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team will open its season at home this weekend, playing host to the 20th annual Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup. George Washington, Liberty and North Florida will all visit Memorial Gymnasium for the two-day tournament. Live statistics will be available for all matches.

Opening serve is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Friday with Liberty playing George Washington before the Cavaliers take the court for the first time at 1 p.m., vs. North Florida. The Ospreys (0-3) enter the tournament looking for their first win of the season. This will mark the first-ever meeting between the two programs on the volleyball court.

In the Friday nightcap, Virginia will take on Liberty (2-1) at 7 p.m. The Flames – participants of the inaugural Jefferson Cup in 1991 – are making their fifth appearance in UVa’s annual tournament, where they are winless against the Cavaliers. In the all-time series between the in-state rivals, Virginia holds the advantage, 28-2. The Flames won the first two meetings between the two programs in 1979 and the Cavaliers have won all 28 since, with the most recent meeting being in the 2005 Jefferson Cup.

Virginia will wrap up play on Saturday at 3 p.m., playing George Washington. The Cavaliers trail the Colonials, 9-5, in the all-time series. This will mark GW’s first appearance in the Jefferson Cup.

In the 19 seasons the Jefferson Cup has been contested, the Cavaliers have earned 11 tournament titles, including the last two-straight under head coach Lee Maes, and five of the past seven. Virginia holds an overall record of 51-10 in the Jefferson Cup and has won its last eight-straight contests.
