Virginia vs. Richmond
Sept. 4, 2010
Mike London Quotes

On the game:
“It was really important to come out and be representative of a team that is trying to improve. We’re trying to show that we have improved academically, we have improved socially and we wanted to show that we could take one quarter at a time and play a game where we don’t self destruct but rather score points and play defense. That’s the improvement we’re looking for. There are things we did well and some things we need to keep working on. Our goal for the season is to improve each time we play.”

On the play of QB Marc Verica:
“He did a good job. He was able to throw the ball deep to some of our wide receivers and they did a good job catching the ball. He didn’t try to win the game by doing something heroic. He stayed within himself and threw high percentage completions and moved the chains. If he continues to do that, he’ll continue to help us.”

On RB Keith Payne:
“He’s a downhill runner. He’s a big guy who is hard to tackle. He complements a different version of our running game. We started running off tackle, downhill plays and we tried to use Keith then and a couple times he carried the whole pile. This was a game where we could use his skills.”

On a run-oriented second half:
“We could see that they were kind of wearing out just a little and we had to take advantage of coming off the ball and trying to establish a run game that would eat up the clock.”

On playing the University of Richmond:
“I graduated from there. I spent a lot of years there as a coach and as a player but we’re playing for (UVa) President Sullivan and the Charlottesville community now and that’s what is most important. But that’s a team that has won championships with all-star caliber players. I’m pleased that we were able to play an elite team and win the game.”
