CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia head women’s lacrosse coach Julie Myers announced that seniors Liz Downs and Marghi Walters have been selected by their teammates as captains for the 2011 season.
“Liz and Marghi are both serious students, competitive athletes and great leaders,” Myers said. “I’m excited for them and for our team to name them our captains this year. I’m sure they’ll continue to lead by example, create success and get involved in the University Community in general.”
Downs is an All-American defender from Alexandria, Va. In starting every game of her career, Downs has become the backbone of Virginia’s defense. She is a two-time All-South Region honoree, was a member of the 2010 All-ACC Team and was on the 2010 All-ACC Academic Team. She has accumulated 66 ground balls, 39 caused turnovers and 34 draw controls in her time as a Cavalier.
Walters is also a defender for the Cavaliers. In stepping into a starting role last year, Walters made an immediate impact for Virginia. She collected 12 ground balls, caused 10 turnovers and scored her first collegiate goal against Old Dominion. The Wyndmoor, Pa., native has also stepped in to take some draw controls, in which she won 16.
