Kohles In Fifth Place After First Round of Fall Preview

Stillwater, OK – Led by the fifth-place effort of junior Ben Kohles, the Virginia men’s golf team is in 12th place after the opening round of play a the Ping/Golfweek Fall Preview taking place at Oklahoma State’s Karsten Course. The Cavaliers opened with a score of 313. The event is UVa’s first tournament of the fall.
Kohles, the co-ACC Player of the Year in 2010, is four shots behind the leader after shooting 1-over 73. Only two players managed to better par at the Karsten Creek course. Oklahoma State’s Talor Gooch leads the event at 3-under 69 and Augusta State’s Henrik Norlander is second at 71.
Virginia’s other scores included a 78 by sophomore Mac McLaughlin, 81s by senior Will Collins and freshman Ben Rusch and an 86 by junior Henry Smart.
Oklahoma State leads the team standings by nine shots after shooting even par 288. Karsten Creek, the site of the 2011 NCAA Championships, was a challenging setup for the field. A total of 20 players in the 55-man field shot 80 or higher.
The second round of the tournament will take place Monday and the final round is set for Tuesday. Live scoring of the tournament is online at Golfstat.com.
