Vail, CO – The 11th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team blew away the field on the final day of play to claim the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club in Vail, Colo. Sophomore Brittany Altomare captured medalist honors for the first time in her career to lead the Cavaliers.

Virginia shot 1-under 287 during Tuesday’s final round to finish with a 54-hole total of 877, seven shots ahead of second-place Arizona which entered the event ranked No. 4 in the nation. It was the Cavaliers first tournament championship since winning the LSU Golf Classic in March of 2009.

Altomare shot 2-under 70 during the final round to beat out Tulane’s Janine Fellows by one shot for medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 4-under 212. She becomes the fourth player in the UVa program’s history to win a tournament. Her previous best finish was a tie for second at last year’s ACC Championships.

Altomare was joined in the top-10 by Cavalier senior Calle Nielson. She shot 3-under 69 on the final day to move up to eighth place overall at 4-over 220. It was the 15th top-10 finish of her career.
