CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Led by solid pitching from Will Roberts and Whit Mayberry, as well as a three-hit performance from Steven Proscia, the Orange team notched a 3-2 win over the Blue team Sunday afternoon in Game 1 of the 2010 Orange and Blue World Series at Davenport Field.

Game 2 of the series is slated for 6 p.m. Tuesday, while Game 3 is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Mitchell Shifflett also had a pair of hits for the Orange. David Coleman, John Hicks, Rob Amaro and Derek Justice each had two hits for the Blue team, which finished with 10 hits. Mayberry (4 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 4 K) earned the win in relief for the Orange, while Justin Thompson (3 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 H, BB, 3 K) was credited with the loss for the Blue.

The teams played five scoreless innings as the two starting pitchers, the Orange’s Roberts and the Blue’s Tyler Wilson, each blanked the opposition for five frames. Each allowed five hits and struck out four. Both teams broke through against the bullpens in the sixth inning, though.

The Blue drew first blood with a run off Mayberry, getting a two-out RBI single from Justice to plate Amaro, who had singled with one out. The Orange countered with two runs in its half of the sixth. After Keith Werman led off with a walk and advanced on a balk, Danny Hultzen singled to shortstop, moving Werman to third. Proscia then singled to right to plate Werman. With two outs, Shane Halley hit a single to score Hultzen and give the Orange the lead.

The Orange padded its lead in the seventh inning as Mitchell Shifflett, who led off with a single, scored on an error.

That run proved key in the ninth when the Blue scored a one-out run on an Amaro single, but Mayberry buckled down to retire the final two batters and leave a pair of runners on base. The Blue left 10 runners on base in the game.
