Cavaliers Sweep ITA All-American Titles

TULSA, Okla. – The Virginia men’s tennis team swept both titles at the ITA All-American Championships as play concluded Sunday at the Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa. First-year Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) won the singles title, while Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) won the doubles title at the year’s first major tournament.

Domijan rallied from dropping the first set of his collegiate career to defeat eighth-seeded Eric Quigley of Kentucky 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. He becomes the third freshman in the 32-year history of the tournament to win the singles title, joining Scott Davis of Stanford in 1980 and Ryan Wolters of Stanford in 1995. Domijan also became the first Cavalier to win the ITA All-American singles championship, as it had been the only major individual title that Virginia had not previously won.

Courtney and Shabaz, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, defeated Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola of Ohio State 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in the final. Courtney and Shabaz, the reigning NCAA Champions, have now won 10 consecutive matches against collegiate competition dating back to last season. They become the second Cavalier team to win the title, joining Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey, who won the championship in 2007.

Virginia became the fifth school to sweep both titles at the tournament.
