Cavaliers Release 2011 Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Schedule

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Jason Vigilante announced the 2011 indoor and outdoor track and field schedule for the Cavaliers’ men’s and women’s teams Wednesday. The Cavaliers, returning one NCAA Champion, 10 All-Americans and 13 ACC Champions, will host two home meets and compete in seven championship events throughout the year.
The 2011 indoor season will consist of 11 competition dates, with six meets taking place in Blacksburg, Va. The Cavaliers will begin the season on Dec. 3-4 at the Liberty Kickoff before heading to the Virginia Tech Invitational (Jan. 14-15) and Hokie Invitational (Jan. 21-22) in back-to-back weekends to open the New Year.
The weekend of Jan. 28 will see the Cavaliers split up and head to Madison Square Garden for the Millrose Games and to the Penn State National Invitational. The squad will then reconvene at Virginia Tech for the VT Elite Meet on Feb. 4-5, before some Cavaliers head to Washington’s Husky Classic on Feb. 11-12, while others return to New York City for the Saturday Night at the Armory.
Virginia will then spend the next two weekends in Blacksburg, attending the Virginia Tech Challenge on Feb. 18-19 as a final preparation for the 2011 ACC Indoor Championships, set for Feb. 24-26.
On March 4-5, the Cavaliers will have one last chance to qualify for the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships, as they head to either Notre Dame’s Alex Wilson Invitational or Virginia Tech’s Final Qualifier (March 4-5). Indoor nationals are slated for College Station, Texas on March 11-12.
The 2011 outdoor season will start on March 19, with Virginia hosting the UVa Spring Swashbuckle. The Cavaliers will then head to Richmond, Va., for the Fred Hardy Invitational (March 25-26), before traveling to Durham, N.C., for the Duke Invitational (April 1-2).
On April 8-9, the Cavaliers will attend two difference meets: the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va., or the Spec Towns Invitational in Athens, Ga. Virginia’s annual Lou Onesty Invitational (April 15-16) will then be used as a final tune-up for the 2011 ACC Outdoor Championships, which will be hosted by Duke on April 21-23.
Following the conference meet, the Cavaliers will head to the Penn Relays (April 28-30) and the ECAC/IC4A Championships (May 13-15), before beginning their postseason.
The 2011 NCAA East Regional will be held in Bloomington, Ind., on May 26-28, while the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships will take place on June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The 2011 USATF Junior and Senior National Championships will be held in Eugene, Ore., on June 23-26.
