CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team continued its strong play on day two of the 2010 ITA Atlantic Regional at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers had five singles players and three doubles teams advance to the round of 16.

Five seeded Cavaliers won a pair of matches on Thursday to reach the round of 16. Top-seeded Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) topped Albert Ochagavia of Old Dominion 6-2, 6-3 and Marc Ferrigno of Longwood 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 seed Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) overcame a slow start to the day to top Kacper Rams of Temple 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 and Erik Hannah of George Washington 6-0, 6-2. Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.), the No. 8 seed, defeated Zach Pine of Virginia Tech 6-4, 6-3 and VCU’s Max Wennakoski 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. No. 13 seed Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) downed Yan Levinski of George Washington 6-2, 6-4 and Trpimir Kujundzic of Virginia Tech 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Steven Eelkman Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands), seeded No. 16, defeated Crescente Lesser of Longwood 6-1, 6-2 and Alex van Gils of George Washington 7-5, 7-5.

In doubles, top-seeded Alex Domijan (Welsey Chapel, Fla.) and Jenkins advanced with an 8-3 win over Wennakoski and Svensson of VCU. Third-seeded Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) and Rooda downed the Virginia Tech team of Pine and Beck 8-2. Brian Fang (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) and Santiago Villegas (Bogota, Colombia) topped the Navy duo of New and Rebersak 8-3 to advance.

Action continues Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center with the round of 16 and quarterfinal singles and the round of 16 doubles. Play begins at 10 a.m. and admission is free.
