CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The third-ranked Virginia field hockey team (13-2, 2-2 ACC) downed No. 14 Wake Forest 4-1 Saturday at the University Hall Turf Field. Sophomore Tara Puffenberger notched a goal and two assists while junior Paige Selenski scored twice and freshman Katie Robinson also recorded a goal.

The Cavaliers outshot Wake Forest 18-8 for the game and took seven penalty corners. The Virginia defense held the Demon Deacons to just one penalty corner. Selenski (Shavertown, Pa.) led the way with six shots.

“We were able to step up and generate some attack off our press,” Virginia head coach Michele Madison said. “Every ACC game is important now and it’s about getting better. Every game is getting us ready for the postseason.”

The Cavaliers scored three times in the first half. Puffenberger’s goal came just 57 seconds into the contest, as she tipped in a pass from Selenski.

Puffenberger (Dallas, Pa.) then returned the favor to Selenski, feeding her the ball on a pretty pass through the Wake defense. Selenski’s first goal came in the 25th minute. Seven minutes later, Puffenberger again sent a beautiful pass over to Robinson (Mount Joy, Pa.) who sitting on the left post, tipped it in.

Wake Forest got on the board in the 50th minute when Jess McFadyen found the back of the cage, assisted by teammate Faith Adams.

Selenski then notched her second score of the game, and 20th of the season, in the 65th minute. Sitting in front of the goal, Selenski received a pass from freshman Elly Buckley (Perth, Australia), after a steal to put UVa on top 4-1.

Wake Forest goalkeeper Kaitlyn Ruhf finished with eight saves, while Virginia senior Kim Kastuk (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) recorded three stops.

Virginia plays host to Radford at 1 p.m. Sunday in the final regular season home game. Seniors Haley Carpenter, Shelly Edmonds, Kaitlyn Hiltz, Kastuk, Taylor Swezey and Boyd Vicars will be honored following the game.
