CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The eight members of the Virginia women’s swimming team scheduled to compete Friday and Saturday at the SMU Classic in Dallas will not participate in the event to provide them the opportunity to attend the funeral services of former Cavalier swimmer Fran Crippen.

The Virginia men’s swimming and diving team’s dual meet against Navy will take place as scheduled at 2 p.m. Friday at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Student-athletes and coaches from both the men’s and women’s teams will attend Crippen’s funeral services in Conshohocken, Pa. on Saturday. Crippen, who concluded his collegiate career at UVa in 2006, passed away Oct. 23 while competing in an open water race in the United Arab Emirates.

Crippen’s sister, Claire, is currently a senior on the women’s swimming team.

A moment of silence for Fran Crippen will be held prior to the men’s dual meet Friday against Navy. In addition, a moment of silence will also be held at four other Virginia home athletics events this week, including women’s soccer vs. NC State on Thursday; men’s soccer vs. Maryland and volleyball vs. Miami on Friday; and football vs. Miami on Saturday.
