Lane Elevated to Associate Head Track and Field Coach

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia director of track and field and cross country Jason Vigilante announced today track and field throws coach Carrie Lane has been elevated to associate head coach.
“Carrie has done an exceptional job over her six years at Virginia,” Vigilante said. “She is one of the top assistant coaches in the country, earning national recognition for our throws program. This new role for her is a well-deserved acknowledgment of what she has already done for our program. She poses the skills that are necessary to continue to help us build a national level program.”
In Lane’s six years at Virginia, she has coached UVa throwers to 16 NCAA Championship appearances and 10 All-America honors, nine ACC titles, 22 All-ACC performances, three NCAA East Region Championships, four Penn Relays titles and six school records. In 2009, she was named the Southeast Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year and went on to be named an assistant coach for the US National Team at the 2009 IAAF World Outdoor Championships.
In addition, two of the most accomplished student-athletes at Virginia were throwers under Lane’s tutelage. Yemi Ayeni and Billie-Jo Grant broke five school records at UVa – the men’s indoor and outdoor shot put and discus marks and the women’s indoor shot put and discus records. A 2009 graduate, Ayeni wrapped up his career with three-straight All-America honors in the discus, three ACC titles, back-to-back Penn Relays titles and the program’s first East Region Championship on the men’s side. Grant, an ACC Scholar-Athlete in 2009, became the program’s first four-time All-American in a single event and won an East Region Championship and ACC title in the women’s discus.
On the international level, Lane has served as an assistant coach on two USA National Team staffs – the 2009 World Championships and 2006 Junior World Championships, while her athletes have competed at various elite events, including the Olympic Games and World Championships. As the personal coach of Adam Nelson, Lane saw the three-time Olympian in the shot put earn a silver medal at the World Outdoor Championships in 2007. In 2008, Nelson won the Tyson Invitational after throwing a world leading mark that ranks No. 3 all-time.
