CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia’s head women’s basketball coach Debbie Ryan has announced that seniors Paulisha Kellum (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Jayna Hartig (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), along with junior Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.), will serve as tri-captains for the 2010-11 season.

“Paulisha, Jayna and Chelsea are going to provide us with great leadership and a great example both on and off the court,” Ryan said. “I feel very confident that they will carry on the legacy of this program in the same way that recent captains and players like Monica Wright and Sharneé Zoll did.”

Kellum has appeared in 98 games during her career and has made 36 starts. She begins 2010-11 chasing the 1,000-point mark for her career with 705 points (7.2 points per game career average). Kellum’s honors last year included being named the Junkanoo Jam’s Most Valuable Player after leading the Cavaliers to victories over South Dakota State and Indiana in Freeport, Bahamas.

Hartig has appeared in 75 games during her career and made three starts – including earning the starting nod in the Cavaliers’ NCAA Tournament first-round game vs. Green Bay last season. Hartig was the recipient of the team’s Unsung Hero Award following the 2009-10 season.

Shine was the team’s second-leading scorer last year (8.0 points per game) and averaged 5.1 rebounds per game. Shine was a double-digit scorer on 12 occasions in 2009-10 and tallied her first-career double double (27 points and 11 rebounds vs. USC Upstate).

Virginia begins its season on Nov. 12 at Hofstra. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., in Hempstead, N.Y.
